The Goldilocks Breast Reduction™
Not too big. Not too small. Just right for you.
When patients come to see me about breast reduction surgery, one of the first questions they ask is:
"What cup size will I be afterwards?"
My answer is simple. I can't guarantee you a cup size.
I'm a breast surgeon, not a bra fitter for Victoria's Secret.
Bra sizes vary between brands, styles and fitters. What one shop calls a C cup, another might call a D. So promising you a particular letter wouldn't be realistic.
What I can do is listen carefully to what you want your breasts to look and feel like, and what you want to be able to do after surgery.
I need more than "I just want smaller breasts"
When a woman sits in front of me and says, "I hate my breasts. I just want them smaller," my response is usually:
"Say more words."
I want to understand exactly what you mean.
- What is it about your breasts that you dislike?
- What clothes would you love to wear?
- Are there activities you currently avoid?
- How do your breasts affect your confidence and everyday life?
- What would you like to be different after surgery?
Show me photographs. Talk to me about your lifestyle. Tell me whether you want a smaller, athletic look or whether keeping some fullness and curves matters to you.
These conversations are an essential part of my assessment.
Because when you're asleep on the operating table, I want your words in my head.
I want to understand what matters to you, rather than simply deciding what I think looks good.
What is my Goldilocks Breast Reduction™?
I call my approach to a classic breast reduction the Goldilocks Breast Reduction™.
Not too big. Not too small. Just right for you.
For many of the women I see, particularly those who have had children or experienced changes in their breasts over time, the aim isn't necessarily to be as small as possible.
They want a meaningful reduction while retaining a shape and fullness that feels right for them.
They might want to feel comfortable in a deep V-neck wrap dress, enjoy the option of wearing a push-up bra, or feel confident in a strapless Bardot top.
They want choice.
My Goldilocks approach is about understanding that balance.
A reduction significant enough to make a difference, while aiming to retain the proportions, shape and fullness that you personally want.
And that balance is different for every woman.
Your body. Your proportions. Your lifestyle.
There isn't one ideal breast size.
I consider your height, frame, hips, body proportions and lifestyle.
A petite woman may have very different goals from someone who is tall with a broader frame.
Some women want to go as small as is safely possible. Others want to retain more fullness.
Neither is right or wrong.
My job is to understand your preferences, assess what is surgically achievable and explain what we can realistically aim for.
Your voice matters in the operating theatre
During breast reduction surgery, I assess the developing breast shape and proportions.
There have been occasions when I've stopped at an assessment point and revisited the words a patient used during her consultation.
Because something might look beautifully proportioned to somebody else, but that doesn't necessarily mean it reflects what that particular woman asked for.
I want the result to reflect our conversations, not simply my personal preference.
Of course, surgery has limitations. The amount of tissue that can safely be removed, your anatomy, healing and other clinical considerations all influence the final result.
No surgeon can promise an exact cup size, perfect symmetry or a particular appearance.
But I can promise to listen, to take your preferences seriously and to explain what is realistically achievable.
It's not about a letter on a bra label
For me, a successful breast reduction isn't defined by whether you end up a B, C or D cup.
It's about working towards a breast size and shape that feels more comfortable, more proportionate and better suited to the life you want to live.
That's the thinking behind my Goldilocks Breast Reduction™.
Not too big. Not too small. Just right for you.
