Explant Surgery
Explant surgery is the surgical removal of breast implants and their surrounding capsule. Miss Dua performs en-bloc capsulectomy and offers auto-augmentation to maintain breast shape.
What is it?
Explant surgery removes the breast implants and, in most cases, the fibrous capsule that has formed around them. The term "en-bloc" means the implant and capsule are removed together as one intact unit.
Why might someone consider it?
- You have symptoms you believe are related to your implants
- You have capsular contracture causing hardness or pain
- Your implants have ruptured
- You no longer want implants and prefer a natural appearance
- You want the capsule removed as well as the implant
What happens during your consultation?
Miss Dua will examine your breasts, discuss your symptoms, and explain the en-bloc technique. She will discuss whether auto-augmentation or an uplift is recommended.
Treatment or surgical process
The implant and capsule are removed together. Miss Dua may perform auto-augmentation, using your own breast tissue to recreate upper pole fullness, or combine the procedure with an uplift or reduction.
Recovery
Most patients stay one night. Recovery is typically one to two weeks, with full activity at six weeks.
Results
The breasts have a natural appearance without implants. With auto-augmentation, upper pole fullness is maintained using your own tissue.
Scarring
Existing implant scars are usually used. If an uplift is performed, additional scarring follows the uplift pattern.
Risks and considerations
- Changes in breast shape
- Scarring
- Seroma or fluid collection
- Infection or bleeding
- Nipple sensation changes
Miss Dua's approach
Miss Dua learned auto-augmentation during her fellowship in Milan. She offers tailored explant solutions, recognising that one technique does not suit everyone.
