    Mastectomy

A mastectomy removes the whole breast. For some women, this is the recommended surgical option. Miss Dua will discuss reconstruction options that can be performed at the same time or later.

    What is it?

A mastectomy is the surgical removal of the entire breast, including the nipple and areola in most cases. It may be recommended when the cancer is large, in multiple areas, or when lumpectomy is not suitable.

    Why might someone consider it?

    • Your cancer is not suitable for breast-conserving surgery
    • You have a genetic mutation that increases your risk and have chosen risk-reducing surgery
    • You prefer mastectomy for personal reasons
    • You want reconstruction performed at the same time

    What happens during your consultation?

Miss Dua will explain the procedure, the recovery, and the reconstruction options available. She will help you make an informed decision.

    Treatment or surgical process

The breast tissue is removed. If you choose immediate reconstruction, this is performed during the same operation.

    Recovery

Most patients stay in hospital for one to two nights. Full recovery takes a few weeks.

    Results

Pathology results will guide any further treatment. Miss Dua will coordinate with your oncology team.

    Scarring

A mastectomy leaves a horizontal or diagonal scar across the chest. Reconstruction can help restore breast shape.

    Risks and considerations

    • Bleeding, infection or wound healing problems
    • Seroma (fluid collection)
    • Changes in chest sensation
    • Psychological impact of breast removal
