Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
Oncoplastic surgery combines cancer removal with breast reshaping techniques. This means the cancer is removed with clear margins while the breast is preserved and reshaped to look natural.
What is it?
Oncoplastic breast surgery is an approach that uses plastic surgery techniques during cancer surgery. It allows larger areas of tissue to be removed while maintaining the shape and appearance of the breast.
Why might someone consider it?
- You want breast-conserving surgery but have a larger tumour
- You want your surgeon to consider cosmetic outcomes alongside cancer treatment
- You want to avoid a dent or distortion after lumpectomy
- You want symmetry between both breasts
What happens during your consultation?
Miss Dua will assess your breast size, tumour location and skin elasticity. She will explain which oncoplastic technique is suitable for you.
Treatment or surgical process
Depending on the tumour, Miss Dua may use tissue displacement (moving breast tissue to fill the defect) or volume reduction (reducing the breast size). A matching procedure on the other breast may be offered.
Recovery
Recovery is similar to standard lumpectomy or reduction surgery, typically one to two weeks.
Results
The aim is clear cancer margins with a natural breast shape. Miss Dua will discuss your pathology results and any further treatment.
Scarring
Scarring depends on the technique used. Miss Dua places incisions to minimise visible scarring.
Risks and considerations
- As with any surgery, risks include bleeding, infection and wound healing
- A matching procedure on the other breast may be recommended
- Further treatment may be needed after surgery
Miss Dua's approach
Miss Dua's oncoplastic training means she plans every cancer operation with cosmetic outcomes in mind from the start, not as an afterthought.
