    Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is a complication where the scar capsule around an implant tightens, causing the breast to feel hard, look distorted or become painful. Miss Dua offers surgical treatment.

    What is it?

Capsular contracture occurs when the natural scar capsule around a breast implant thickens and contracts. This can cause the breast to feel firm, look round or distorted, and sometimes cause discomfort.

    Why might someone consider it?

    • Your breast feels hard or firm around the implant
    • Your breast has changed shape or looks rounder
    • You have discomfort or pain from a tight capsule
    • Your implant has shifted position due to contracture

    What happens during your consultation?

Miss Dua will examine your breasts and assess the degree of contracture. She will discuss whether implant removal with capsulectomy is the best option.

    Treatment or surgical process

Treatment involves removing the implant and the contracted capsule (capsulectomy). Depending on your goals, this may be combined with auto-augmentation, an uplift, or implant exchange.

    Recovery

Recovery is typically one to two weeks.

    Results

The firmness and distortion caused by the contracture are resolved. The breast has a softer, more natural appearance.

    Scarring

Existing implant scars are usually used.

    Risks and considerations

    • If implants are replaced, capsular contracture can recur
    • Bleeding or infection
    • Changes in breast shape

    Miss Dua's approach

Miss Dua does not perform primary breast augmentation. For capsular contracture, she offers explant with capsulectomy, focusing on natural results using your own tissue.

Capsular Contracture — frequently asked questions

Can capsular contracture be treated without surgery?

In early stages, some treatments may help, but established contracture usually requires surgery.

    Will contracture come back?

If implants are removed rather than replaced, contracture cannot recur. Miss Dua will discuss your options.
