Capsulectomy
A capsulectomy removes the scar capsule that forms around a breast implant. Miss Dua performs total en-bloc capsulectomy, removing the implant and capsule together.
What is it?
When a breast implant is placed, the body forms a layer of scar tissue around it called a capsule. A capsulectomy is the surgical removal of this capsule. En-bloc capsulectomy removes the implant and capsule together as one unit.
Why might someone consider it?
- You have capsular contracture causing hardness, pain or distortion
- You are having your implants removed and want the capsule removed too
- You have symptoms you believe are related to the capsule
- Your implant has ruptured and the capsule needs to be removed
What happens during your consultation?
Miss Dua will examine your breasts and discuss whether a capsulectomy is recommended as part of your implant removal.
Treatment or surgical process
The capsule is removed along with the implant. This is performed carefully to ensure no capsule tissue remains.
Recovery
Recovery is similar to explant surgery, typically one to two weeks.
Results
The capsule and implant are removed, relieving symptoms of contracture or discomfort.
Scarring
Existing implant scars are usually used.
Risks and considerations
- Bleeding or infection
- Seroma
- Changes in breast shape
- In rare cases, complete en-bloc removal may not be possible due to anatomy
Miss Dua's approach
Miss Dua performs total en-bloc capsulectomy wherever possible, ensuring the capsule is removed intact with the implant.
