    Implant Rupture

A breast implant rupture means the implant shell has torn or broken. Miss Dua provides assessment and surgical removal of ruptured implants with capsulectomy.

    What is it?

An implant rupture is a tear or break in the silicone shell of a breast implant. With silicone implants, the gel may stay within the capsule (intracapsular rupture) or leak outside it (extracapsular rupture).

    Why might someone consider it?

    • You have been told your implant has ruptured
    • You have noticed a change in breast shape or size
    • You have pain, swelling or a lump following an implant
    • You want your ruptured implant removed

    What happens during your consultation?

Miss Dua will arrange imaging if needed to confirm the rupture and discuss the removal plan.

    Treatment or surgical process

The ruptured implant and capsule are removed. Miss Dua performs en-bloc capsulectomy where possible. She will discuss whether an uplift or auto-augmentation is recommended.

    Recovery

Recovery is typically one to two weeks.

    Results

The ruptured implant and any leaked gel are removed. The breast has a natural appearance.

    Scarring

Existing implant scars are usually used.

    Risks and considerations

    • Some silicone gel may be difficult to remove completely
    • Bleeding or infection
    • Changes in breast shape

    Miss Dua's approach

Miss Dua carefully removes ruptured implants and the surrounding capsule, ensuring as much silicone as possible is cleared.

Implant Rupture — frequently asked questions

    Is a ruptured implant dangerous?

A rupture is not usually an emergency, but it should be assessed and treated. Contact the clinic to arrange an appointment.
